How to Sew a Drink Coaster

It’s summer time!! Get your iced drinks ready!

Summer is finally here! As the weather warms up, I always enjoy a nice glass of iced tea. (No sugar, please) I usually add some fresh cut fruit such as strawberries or pineapple slices to sweeten up my tea.

My husband built us a beautiful pergola in our backyard and we love to sit under it and hangout during sunset time. I decided to make us some fun summer time coasters with my new Vintage Hawaii Spoonflower collection.

See how I made these coasters below.

Things you’ll need for this project:

  • Fabric (8 pieces cut to 5 inch x 5 inch)
  • Batting or fleece (4 pieces cut to 5 inch x 5 inch)
  • Scissors
  • Iron
  • Chop stick or something pointy

Use 3/8 seam allowance.

The fabrics in this project are from my Spoonflower Vintage Hawaii collection available here.

I used fleece instead of batting in this project because I did not have any batting. This is a nice project if you have fabric scraps leftover.

Once all your pieces are cut and ironed, place the two outer fabrics facing each other. Add the inner (fleece or batting) lining over one of them and sew all around leaving 2 inches opening. Use a 3/8 inch seam allowance.

Use scissors to trim all four corners, careful not to trim the section you just sewed.

Turn the coaster out and use a chopstick to poke out the corners.

Top stitch all around the coaster and you’re done!
