Space Theme Family Costumes

Every year my family likes to dress up for Halloween. I usually opt for creating costumes ourselves. I usually upcycle old clothes and make costumes that can be used for other events. This year, our theme is Space! My husband is a big fan of astronomy and since we haven’t done this theme before, it was perfect!

My husband is going as the Solar System, I will be a green Alien and our puppers, Kora, will be an Astronaut.

(Kora’s Astronaut costume is from Target)

I grabbed 2 shirts from Walmart for $5.99 each. A Navy blue and a bright Neon Yellow shirt. I was looking for a bright lime green color shirt but couldn’t find one. You can use any color you want.

I worked on the Alien costume first. The items you need for this project are:

  • Lime green or Neon Yellow Shirt
  • Head band for the googly eyes (purchased from Ben Franklin Craft Store for $4.99)
  • Scissors
  • Black puffy paint
  • Glue

The First cut I made was for the neck line. I measured 3 inches to the side of the neckline, cut down towards the neck line, folded it over and continued to cut the rest of the neck line.

I then cut the sleeves. I cut each lines in the sleeves about 1 in apart. After you’re done with the sleeves, I added some cuts to the center front and back of the shirt.

After the sleeves were done, I worked on the Alien face.  I used the black puffy paint to draw the Alien face.

Tip: Make sure you put a piece of paper inside the shirt between the top and bottom so that the puffy paint doesn’t go through the fabric.

Last, but not least, I worked on the head band. I purchased the pumpkin headband from our local craft store, Ben Franklin’s for $4.99. You can get creative and make your own headband with some pipe cleaners too.

I took off the pumpkins that were originally on the head band and replaced them with extra fabric from the neckline I cut off. I cut out round circles the size of a quarter and glued down the fabric circles onto the headband.

While the Alien costume dried, I worked on my husband’s Solar System shirt.

Solar System Shirt

The items you will need for the Solar System shirt project are:

  • Navy blue or black shirt
  • Puffy Paint in different colors; red, gold glitter,  silver, yellow, orange, purple, blue, green, dark blue, glitter silver

To make this shirt, use the puffy paint to paint the planets as seen below.

Once you are done puffy painting your shirts,  I recommend washing in cold water and hand drying. If you put the shirts in the dryer, the planets and the alien face may stick together.

Once the shirts are dry, about 3 hours depending on the paint, your costume is ready! Overall, this project took about 1.5 hours to make plus the dry time. I hope this blog post inspires you if you are in need of a last minute Halloween costume.

Have a happy and safe Halloween!

With Love and Aloha,
Kris Wong
